Hydrocephalus is a condition that occurs when fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell or commonly called as "water in the brain." Hydrocephalus occurs during pregnancy and might cause permanent brain damage. It can be fatal if left untreated. For Congenital Hydrocephalus the goal is to prevent further brain damage. Hydrocephalus can be treated either by shunting, a drainage system made of a long tube with a valve and has to be monitored regularly. The other is a procedure called ventriculastomy can be performed as an alternative by making a hole at the bottom of the ventole. By working with professionals, children can learn to manage their disability and lessen the lifelong effects.
